STRUCTURAL STEEL
Case Study
In fall 2017, a large Montana-based structural steel fabricator approached Craftco to assist in the completion of a structural steel package for a large water treatment plant.
This third-generation Montana company–with an impressive portfolio of different sized projects– has been recognized as one of the area’s leaders in structural steel fabrication for the last 50 years. As an industry leader, they pride themselves on maintaining excellent quality fabrication standards and tight delivery schedules. With a recent building boom in the area, they’ve been overwhelmed and struggled to complete projects, providing Craftco a great opportunity to manage a large structural steel package and experiment with process flow within current facility size.
Craftco competitively bid on the water treatment plant project and committed to developing 55 tons of structural steel in a tight four-week deadline. In order to meet the deadline, Craftco developed a special workflow plan detailing material placement in the shop and how materials would pass through the machines. Craftco also established a thorough system of quality control to sign off on checking features at each stage of development. The fabrication was completed ahead of schedule and delivered in one shipment, despite the difficulty of planning around the end-of-year holidays and erecting the project on location. Craftco exceeded customer quality expectations with tight tolerances and the Montana team on site commented, “This was the smoothest construction project we can ever remember.” Overall, the customer was very satisfied with the quality, value of products for price paid, and timeliness of the product they received.
The willingness to take on this project (especially around holidays) shows the incredible work ethic of the Craftco team. As a result of working on this project, Craftco’s structural steel processes are streamlined and the thorough quality control processes are used in current projects.
